| British Cycle Quest (BCQ) |
The British Cycle Quest (BCQ) has been created by the CTC to encourage cyclists to explore the countryside. Visit any county (not to mention several offshore islands) and there are six sites to visit. To prove you have visited a site, you will need to answer a question about it. These questions are listed, together with a grid reference and a description of the site you are looking for, on County Cards.
The UK has been divided up into four regions: England Region A (21 counties / 126 sites), England Region B (21 counties / 126 sites), Wales (8 counties/ 48 sites) and Scotland (17 counties/islands / 102 sites).
Whenever you go touring, you could plan your itinerary to include some sites and so gradually increase the number you have visited. Visit 50 sites and you can obtain a certificate to mark the achievement. When you have visited 100 sites, you can obtain a certificate and a bronze medal and the same goes for when you've visited 200 and 300 sites (silver and gold medals respectively). Should you ever visit all 402 sites you will be presented with a commemorative certificate and trophy.
County Cards and a Wall Chart to record your progress are obtainable from CTC HQ (see the Order Form) (PDF format).
To obtain certificates and medals, you will need to put the answers to the questions in the space provided on the relevant County Card and send them for validation to Mark Waters, the temporary competition co-ordinator, at CTC, Parklands, Railton Road, Guildford GU2 9JX (Tel 01483 238305). Needless to say, you are expected to travel to each location on a cycle and you will need to confirm this by signing each card.
There is no time limit for collecting answers - you can take as long as you like!
We hope you enjoy a lot of pleasurable cycling as you travel round the country discovering places you might never otherwise have visited. Thanks must go to all the CTC members who have explored every part of the country seeking out suitable sites. Many sites used for BCQ's predecessor, the Touring Explorers' Award had disappeared or had not been chosen wisely in the first place. We hope that BCQ sites will prove more robust. Inevitably, the odd problem will crop up, and any updates will be posted here. If you are unable to locate a site, or there are problems with access, please let the temporary BCQ co-ordinator, Mark Waters, know.
